North-West search suspended

The search for a missing man and an overdue vessel in North West Tasmania has been suspended.

An area of anomaly on the seabed near the coastline identified as part of a two-day sonar survey was investigated and determined to be unrelated to the missing man and vessel.

Inspector Steve Jones said that the 11 day search had been suspended following a comprehensive independent review of the search.

“Considering poor weather conditions and cool temperatures, expert advice has determined it is extremely unlikely that Thomas Courto could have survived,” he said.

“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the three people – Isaiah Dixon, Thomas Courto, and Bree-Anna Thomas – who were tragically lost at sea.

“This task was considerable and I’d like to recognise the efforts of all involved in the search, including specialist search and rescue and marine police.

“I’d also like to thank volunteers from the State Emergency Service and Surf Life Saving Tasmania and the wider North-West community for their important assistance and support while undertaking this extensive search.”

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
