Police continuing road safety efforts in the Huon Valley

Police have continued to conduct high visibility traffic operations in the Huon Valley, using specialist resources targeting speeding, alcohol and drug driving, possession of illicit substances, vehicle registration compliance, and vehicle roadworthiness.

Today police were joined by Transport Safety Inspectors, who provided assistance and expertise in assessing vehicle compliance.

“Operations of this nature will remain an ongoing priority in response to incidents of hooning and dangerous driving on rural roads and highways in the Huon Valley,” said Senior Sergeant Peter Borish.

“We will continue to undertake these enforcement activities and traffic patrols, to help keep everyone safe on our roads,” he said.

“The message is clear – safe driving behaviour, vehicle roadworthiness, and all other offences on our roads will be enforced, and we could be anywhere, at anytime.”

“Unfortunately we’ve recently observed a number of issues with unroadworthy vehicles, and cars that have new owners without the appropriate documentation.”

“Remember that if you’re buying, selling or transferring a vehicle, you must comply with all the legal requirements – visit transport.tas.gov.au for more information.”

Today’s results included:

  • More than 260 roadworthiness and compliance inspections were undertaken, and 23 drivers were issued defect notices.
  • More than 100 drug and alcohol tests were conducted.
  • Three drivers were detected driving unregistered vehicles and failing to wear seatbelts.
  • A 51-year-old male from Cygnet was detected driving whilst disqualified
