Police encourage people to send 2020 off safely across the state

Tasmania Police is encouraging people to celebrate responsibly if they’re planning on having a few drinks for New Year’s Eve tomorrow night.

“Police are urging everyone celebrating New Year’s Eve tomorrow night to drink responsibly, look after their mates, and plan a safe way home,” said Acting Inspector Justin Lawson.

“This year has been difficult for a lot of people with COVID-19, and I encourage anyone planning on celebrating sending off 2020 tomorrow night to do so safely.

“New Year’s Eve is normally a time of celebration and we don’t want to interfere with anyone out to enjoy themselves, however, we will not tolerate aggressive or violent behaviour.”

Proactive police patrols will be conducted in the entertainment precincts of Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie to deter alcohol-related offences and violence.

“Police will have a highly visible police presence out and about across the state for New Years Eve to ensure everyone has a safe environment. Anyone whose behaviour is impacting on others may be lawfully directed to leave an area, issued with an infringement notice or, where necessary, arrested.

“The potential impacts of COVID-19 are still with us and people should be mindful of Public Health restrictions which remain in place, be mindful of the risks with gathering on the waterfront, and consider other vantage points for viewing the fireworks.

“If you’re planning on going out drinking tonight please remember to drink responsibly, act sensibly, and look after your mates.”

“We want everyone to enjoy their celebrations and get home safely.

“Never risk getting behind the wheel if you’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol – losing your licence or killing or seriously injuring yourself or someone else in a crash is not the way we want anyone to end their year.”

Police will be patrolling the roads state-wide for drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs to keep the roads safe.
